Pa­gans be­lieved mistle­toe had a mys­ti­cal life force of fer­til­ity. Kiss­ing un­der the mistle­toe be­came a pop­u­lar Vic­to­rian par­lour game: each white berry rep­re­sented a kiss, and for each kiss given a berry was re­moved, un­til none were left and the kiss­ing had to stop.
