Advent calendars

Counting down to Christmas was started by Germans in the 19th century, who made chalk marks on a door and wiped them off each day. The Advent calendar was invented by Gerhard Lang, whose mother placed a cookie on each day of a calendar leading up to Christmas when he was a child. This inspired him to produce a commercial Advent calendar.
