HOW TO LOVE CLEANING

Mrs Hinch’s top tips

-

1 DO A ‘HINCH HAUL’ ‘Start by going shopping for cleaning products you like. Choose scents that make you happy – I love pine-scented disinfectant for the loo, and 1001 Thai Orchid & Passion Fruit Carpet Fresh spray for my rugs. If you get excited about the products, it makes cleaning so much more fun!’

2 GET ORGANISED ‘Cleaning is always more enjoyable when it feels easy. I organise all my cleaning products into baskets, so you can have an everyday basket, or a bathroom basket – or even the more specific toilet basket, or hob basket. That way, everything you need will be in one place for when you get started.’

3 PUT ON A GREAT PLAYLIST ‘Who doesn’t feel happy when they put on their favourite tunes? I have a great time dancing around while I clean, and it’s similar to listening to music at the gym: a good beat can be really motivating, and you’ll often do another five minutes if a great track comes on!’ 4 HAVE A CHECKLIST ‘I have a little notebook where I write down all the things I want to achieve, like mopping the floors and dusting my ornaments, and tick them off as I go. It feels great marking everything off, and I love looking back at previous lists whenever I’m feeling unproductive, to show myself what I’m capable of. But remember not to put too much pressure yourself – there’s always tomorrow.’

5 TAKE BEFORE AND AFTER PICTURES ‘Another way to track your achievements is to take photos before you start cleaning, then afterwards when everything looks lovely. It’s so satisfying seeing the difference.’ 6 BE SILLY! ‘I have names for all my favourite cleaning tools – like Dave the duster, and Buddy the kitchen cloth. It’s just for a laugh, but makes the whole thing more fun. It’s a great way to get kids involved, too.’
