2 MONITOR YOUR MOLES
Examine existing moles and new mole-like marks using the ABCDE checklist. Asymmetry: the two halves of a mole may differ in shape. Border: the edges may be blurred, show notches or look ragged. Colour: may be uneven and patchy, and new colours may appear. Diameter: if you see any mole or mole-like mark getting bigger over a period of weeks or months, tell your doctor. Expert: if in doubt, check it out!
WHY? Monthly top-to-toe checks are recommended by the British Association of Dermatologists, to look for changes that might indicate melanoma, a form of skin cancer. Most cases can be cured if detected early.
WHAT NOW Tell your GP about any changes to your moles. If your doctor is concerned, they’ll refer you to a skin cancer specialist.
