Q I read that acupuncture can help to relieve cancer pain. Is this true? A A recent review of 14 studies investigating the use of acupuncture for cancer-related pain found it offered additional benefits when used together with painkillers. Acupuncture also appears to reduce joint pain that can result from some chemotherapy treatments. A study involving women with breast cancer who received either true acupuncture, sham acupuncture or no treatment, found those who received true acupuncture experienced significantly less joint pain than the other two groups. It’s important to let your doctors know if you are thinking of trying any complementary therapies, so they can ensure these don’t interfere with your medical treatment, and can monitor your progress.
