STROKE PREVENTION

-

Q I’m making a slow recovery after a stroke three months ago, and wonder if any dietary approaches might reduce my risk of another?

A Rehabilitation after a stroke can be slow but the long-term results are worth it. Studies suggest that good intakes of nuts, fruits, veg, dairy foods, fish and tea, and moderate consumption of coffee and chocolate have a protective effect against stroke, while a high consumption of red and processed meats may increase stroke risk. Artificially sweetened drinks appear to triple the risk of ischemic stroke, so best avoided. Following a Mediterranean-style diet is especially beneficial for the circulation. Even if you don’t manage to eat five servings of fruit and veg a day, increasing your intake by just one serving per day can lower the risk of another stroke by around 6%. Also reduce your intake of salt – as a high salt intake compared to a low one can significantly increase the risk of a stroke.
