MATERIALS

13(14:15:16:18) 50g balls of Rowan Denim Revive in Lipstick 214.

Pair each size 3.25mm and 3.75mm knitting needles. 2 double-pointed 3.25mm knitting needles.

Six 20mm shell buttons.

TENSION

22 sts and 29 rows to 10cm square over st-st using 3.75mm needles.

With 3.25mm needles, cast on 106(114:126:138:150) sts. 1st row (RS) K2, [p2, k2] to end. 2nd row P2, [k2, p2] to end. These 2 rows form rib and are repeated. Rib a further 16 rows and dec(inc:inc:dec:dec) 1 st at end of last row. 105(115:127:137:149) sts. Change to 3.75mm needles. Beg with a k row, work in st-st. Work straight until back measures 43(43.5:44:44.5:45)cm, ending with a p row.

Shape armholes

Cast off 5(6:7:8:9) sts at beg of next 2 rows. 95(103:113:121:131) sts.

Next row (RS) K2, k2tog tbl, k to last 4 sts, k2tog, k2. Next row P2, p2tog, p to last 4 sts, p2tog tbl, p2. Working all armhole decs as set by last 2 rows, dec 1 st at each end of next 3(3:5:5:7) rows, then on foll 5(7:7:7:6) alt rows. 75(79:85:93:101) sts. Cont straight until armhole measures 19(20.5:22:23.5:25)cm, ending with a p row.

Shape shoulders

Cast off 3(3:4:5:5) sts at beg of next 6(2:6:6:4) rows, then -(4:-:-:6) sts at beg of foll -(4:-:-:2)rows. 57(57:61:63:69) sts.

Shape back neck

Next row (RS) Cast off 4(4:4:5:6) sts, k until there are 8(8:9:9:10) sts on right needle, turn and leave rem sts on a holder. Cast off 4 sts at beg of next row. Cast off rem 4(4:5:5:6) sts. With RS facing, rejoin yarn and cast off centre 33(33:35:35:37) sts, k to end. Complete to match first side, reversing shapings.

LEFT FRONT

With 3.25mm needles, cast on 55(59:63:71:75) sts. 1st row (RS)

K2, [p2, k2] to last st, k1. 2nd row

K1, p2, [k2, p2] to end. These 2 rows

form rib. Rib a further 16 rows and dec 3(2:0:3:1) sts evenly across last row. 52(57:63:68:74) sts. Change to

3.75mm needles. Beg with a k row, now work in st-st. Cont straight until left front matches Back to beg of armhole shaping, ending with a p row.

Shape armhole

Cast off 5(6:7:8:9) sts at beg of next row. 47(51:56:60:65) sts. Work 1 row. Working all armhole decs as set by Back, dec 1 st at armhole edge of next 5(5:7:7:9) rows, then on foll 5(7:7:7:6) alt rows. 37(39:42:46:50) sts. Cont straight until 16(16:18:18:20) rows fewer have been worked than on Back to beg of shoulder shaping, ending with a p row.

Shape front neck

Next row (RS) K28(30:33:37:41), cast off rem 9 sts. With WS facing, rejoin yarn, working all neck decs in same way as armhole decs, cont as follows: dec 1 st at neck edge of next 6 rows, then on foll 4(4:5:5:6) alt rows. 18(20:22:26:29) sts. Work 1 row, ending with a p row.

Shape shoulder

Cast off 3(3:4:5:5) sts at beg of next row and foll 2(0:3:3:1) alt rows, and 4(4:-:-:6) sts at beg of foll 1(3:-:-:2) alt rows and, at same time, dec 1 st at neck edge of 3rd row. Work 1 row. Cast off rem 4(4:5:5:6) sts.

RIGHT FRONT

With 3.25mm needles, cast on 55(59:63:71:75) sts. 1st row (RS) K3, [p2, k2] to end. 2nd row P2, [k2, p2] to last st, k1. These 2 rows form rib. Complete to match Left Front, reversing shapings and working first row of neck shaping as follows:

Next row (RS) Cast off 9 sts, k to end. 28(30:33:37:41) sts.

SLEEVES

With 3.25mm needles, cast on 50(54:54:54:58) sts. Rib 18 rows as given for Back and inc(dec:inc:inc:dec)1 st at end of last row. 51(53:55:55:57) sts.

Change to 3.75mm needles. Beg with a k row, work in st-st throughout. Work 6(6:6:4:4) rows, ending with a p row. Next row (RS) K2, m1, k to last 2 sts, m1, k2. Working all incs as set by last row, inc 1 st at each end of every foll 10th(8th:8th:6th:6th) row to 71(65:73:65:75) sts, then on every foll 0(10th:10th:8th:8th) row until there are 71(75:79:83:87) sts. Cont straight until sleeve measures 45(45:46:46:46)cm, ending with a p row.

Shape top

Cast off 5(6:7:8:9) sts at beg of next 2 rows. 61(63:65:67:69) sts. Working all decs in same way as armhole decs, dec 1 st at each end of next 3 rows, then on foll 2 alt rows, then on 4 foll 4th rows. 43(45:47:49:51) sts. Work 1 row. Dec 1 st at each end of next row and every foll alt row until 31 sts rem, then on foll 7 rows, ending with a p row. Cast off rem 17 sts.

HOOD

With 3.75mm needles, cast on 129(129:135:135:141) sts. 1st row (RS)

K7, sl 1 (to form fold line), k to last 8 sts, sl 1 (to form fold line), k7. 2nd row K1, p to last st, k1. These 2 rows set the sts. Keeping sts correct as now set throughout, cont as follows: Place marker on centre st. 3rd row K7, sl 1, k to within 1 st of marked st, m1, k3 (marked st is centre st of this group of 3 sts), m1, k to last 8 sts, sl 1, k7. Work 1 row. 5th row

K7, sl 1, k2, k2tog tbl, yf (to make eyelet), k to last 12 sts, yf, k2tog (to make eyelet), k2, sl 1, k7. Work 1 row. Working all back shaping as set by 3rd row, inc 1 st at each side of marked centre back st on next row and 3 foll 4th rows, then on

2 sts of marked st, k2tog, k marked st, skpo, k to last 8 sts, sl 1, k7. Working all decs as set by last row, dec 1 st at each side of marked st on 6th and foll 4th row, then on foll 4 alt rows, ending with a RS row. 129(129:135:135:141) sts. Next row

(WS) K1, p to within 2 sts of marked st, p2tog tbl, p marked st, p2tog, p to last st, k1. Working all decs as now set, dec 1 st at each side of marked st on next 4 rows, ending with a WS row. 119(119:125:125:131) sts. Next row

(RS) K7, sl 1, k to within 2 sts of marked st, k2tog tbl, k marked st and turn. 118(118:124:124:130) sts, 59(59:62:62:65) sts on each needle. Fold hood in half with RS together and, using a spare needle, cast off both sets of 59(59:62:62:65) sts together (to form top seam of hood).

BUTTON BAND

Join both shoulder seams. With RS facing and 3.25mm needles, pick up and k124(129:134:134:139) sts evenly down left front opening edge, from neck shaping to cast on edge. K 10 rows. Cast off knitwise on WS.

BUTTONHOLE BAND

With RS facing and 3.25mm needles, pick up and k124(129:134:134:139) sts evenly up right front opening edge, from cast on edge to neck shaping.

K 5 rows. 6th (buttonhole) row (RS) K4, [yf, k2tog, k21(22:23:23:24)] 5 times, yf, k2tog, k3. K 4 rows. Cast off knitwise on WS. Fold hood facing to inside along fold line and sew in place. Positionin­g folded edges of hood midway across top of bands and matching marked centre back st of hood to centre back neck, sew hood to neck edge easing in slight fullness.

HOOD DRAWSTRING

With double-pointed 3.25mm needles, cast on 3 sts. 1st row (RS) K3,

* without turning, slip these 3 sts to opposite end of needle and bring yarn to opposite end of work pulling it quite tightly across WS of work, k these 3 sts again, rep from * until drawstring is 135cm long. Cast off.

TO MAKE UP

Thread drawstring through front facing of hood through eyelet holes. With centre of cast off edge of sleeve to shoulder, sew sleeves into armholes, easing to fit. Join side and sleeve seams. Sew on buttons.
