Craft Club with Sara Davies Make a macramé plant hanger

The Dragons’ Den star and boss of the hugely successful Crafter’s Companion shares her love of creating… MAKE YOUR OWN MACRAMÉ PLANT HANGER

-

Ilove challenging myself and trying out new crafts, especially when I need five minutes to relax during a busy day! Last year, I started experimenting with macramé and I’ve been working my way up to some bigger projects using this popular trend. This plant hanger is fab and it’s still a relatively easy one to try if you’re to a beginner or just want practise your techniques.

TO MAKE

Begin by cutting nine pieces of jute twine or yarn. If you want to achieve a regular hanger for an average-sized plant pot, each piece should be approximately 250cm long, but you can adjust the length depending on what you’d like.

Once you have your nine pieces, fold them in half. Bundle the jute or twine lengths together and wrap a length of string around to secure, a little further down from the fold, to create a small loop to hang your macramé pot holder. When you hold the centre, you should essentially have 18 pieces that are half the length of what you started with.

Divide the 18 strands into three sections, each with six strands. Split these into three again and braid from the hanging loop until about 35cm down. Tie a knot in the end of each braid. Measure around 15cm from a braid knot and section it into two so that you have two lots of three strands.

Gather one of the groups of three with an group of three from an adjacent braid and tie them together with a knot. Repeat until all three braids have been connected.

Measure a further 15cm down and tie another set of knots on each section. Lastly, measure another 15cm down and make a large knot with all

18 of the pieces.

Trim the strings until you are satisfied with the length at the bottom. Place the plant pot and plant in the macramé holder.
