Seasonal beauty
Modern agriculture means there are few truly seasonal fruit crops nowadays, but blood oranges are one of the exceptions. Available from late winter to early spring, these stunning citrus fruits are worth seeking out, if only for their beauty. Look for a decent amount of red-blush speckling on the skins and expect the orange flavour to be mixed with a hint of berry-like sweetness. Not just for dessert, make the most of their looks by mixing them in zingy savoury salads with ingredients such as beetroot, mint or soft goat’s cheese.
