AMERICAN BURGER
A classic takeaway that never fails to please.
SERVES 4 PREP 20min, plus chilling COOK about 20min
FOR THE BURGER
• 500g good-quality steak mince
• ½ small onion, finely chopped
• 1 medium egg
• ½tbsp Dijon mustard
• 100g fresh white breadcrumbs
• 2tbsp sunflower oil
• 8 Cheddar cheese slices
• 4 burger buns
TO SERVE, OPTIONAL
• Little Gem lettuce leaves
• Tomato slices
• Gherkin spears
1 Put mince into a large bowl and mix in chopped onion, egg, mustard, breadcrumbs and plenty of seasoning.
Divide mixture equally into 4 and shape each portion into a flattened patty. Put burgers on a plate, cover and chill for 30min to firm up.
2 Preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fan) mark 6. Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat and fry burgers for 8min, turning midway through, until each side is well browned. Transfer to a baking tray and lay a slice of cheese on top of each patty. Cook in oven for 12min, adding another slice of cheese to each after 6min.
3 Meanwhile, toast buns. Check the burgers are cooked through then serve in the buns, topped with lettuce leaves, tomato slices and a gherkin spear, if you like. Serve with fries and your favourite sauces.
