Staying in with… STEPHEN MCGANN

We ask a celeb how they enjoy a night in at home…

-

My ideal night begins with…

The phones being turned off.

They never stop in our house! I’d invite… My partner, Heidi [Thomas,

Call The Midwife’s creator]. Who else could I trust to see me at my sexy best – an old pair of dad slippers and a gravy-stained T-shirt?

And drinking… We don’t! Mine is a diet Coke, and Heidi is usually happy with a gin and tonic once every blue moon.

My night-in essential is… Cats! We have two of them – Louie and Michael. Their job is to lie there on the rug and create an air of domestic bliss. That’s the theory, anyway. Have you ever tried to tell a cat what to do?

My current boxset of choice is…

Several! Wandavision, I Hate Suzie,

The Great and Call My Agent. I swap between them depending on my mood. The night will end with… Taking the bins out! The eroticism never ends in my house.

The best house or dinner party I’ve

thrown was…the one where Jerry Hall asked me to put ketchup on her chips. It wasn’t strictly a dinner party, but the rest is true, so I’m damned if that doesn’t qualify!

I’ll go to bed at… Late O’clock.

We’re both terrible for reading late, then needing a vat of coffee to get going the next morning.

The book on my bedside table is…

Icebound by Andrea Pitzer – an account of how a 16th-century Dutch expedition to find a northern sea route to China ended up with its sailing ship trapped in Arctic ice for a whole winter. Frostbite, polar bears and scurvy anyone?

• The 10th anniversary series of Call The Midwife begins in April
