The Scottish capital has something for everyone, so follow our guide and enjoy the perfect getaway
Our new series of city guides visits Scotland
Best coffee shop
The Milkman (themilkman.coffee) in the heart of the Old Town is named after owner Mark’s great-grandfather, the last horse-drawn milkman in Huntly, Aberdeenshire.
Don’t miss
For something new, head to the recently opened Johnnie Walker experience ( johnniewalker.com) on Princes Street for a whisky tasting.
Local eats
The trendy Timberyard (timberyard.co) is based in a 19th-century warehouse once used as a props and costume store. Run by chef Tom Kitchin, The Scran & Scallie (scranandscallie.com) is a stylish gastropub. For seasonal food and stunning skylines, try The Lookout by Gardener’s Cottage (thelookoutedinburgh. co) on Calton Hill. The St James Quarter features the new Bonnie & Wild Scottish Marketplace (bonnieandwildmarket.com) with a wide choice of places to eat.
Wow factor
The famous hill in the middle of the city, Arthur’s Seat, is an extinct volcano. Viewed from afar, it has a striking resemblance to a sleeping lion.
Best independent shops (and what to buy)
Don’t miss a walk down Victoria Street, just off the Grassmarket, one of the most picturesque shopping streets in the world, home to independent shops including Walker Slater (walkerslater. com) for clothing, Red Door Gallery (edinburghart.com) for art, jewellery and creative gifts and Museum Context (museumcontext.com) for homewares.
And so to bed
A calm oasis in the New Town, Eden Locke Apart Hotel
(lockeliving.com/en/edinburgh) is great for an affordable stay. Studios from £107 a night. Located in the former national newspaper’s buildings, The Scotsman
(scotsmanhotel.co.uk) punches above its four-star rating. Doubles from £250 a night. Star spot
Known as the most cinematic city in Europe, Edinburgh is the backdrop for films from Trainspotting with Ewan Mcgregor to One Day with Anne Hathaway, and even Avengers: Infinity War, plus a host of TV dramas.
