SEEING RED

-

Q A GUEST SPILT RED WINE ON MY BEIGE CARPET AND ALTHOUGH I SPRINKLED SALT ON IT, THE STAIN IS STILL THERE. WHAT CAN I DO?

A It’s an enduring myth that you should sprinkle salt on a red wine stain, says Prima consumer editor Emilie Martin.

‘As red wine contains tannin, salt can actually set the stain and make it harder to remove. Dab the stain with a little sparkling water on a dry white cloth, then use stain remover, which is pretty effective these days. Try Wine Away

Stain Remover (£12.95, Amazon). Blot with white paper towels to lift the stain. Repeat as necessary.’
