NOTES

● When casting off groups of sts, for the neck and shoulder shapings, slip the first st of each group, this will produce a smoother slope, rather than a stepped one.

BACK

With 5mm needles and A, cast on 101(113:125) sts.

1st row (RS) K2, [p1, k2] to end. 2nd row P to end. These 2 rows form the broken rib patt and are repeated. Cont in patt until back measures 20(21:21)cm from cast on edge, ending with a 1st patt row, change to B and cont in patt for a further 18(19:20)cm, ending with a 1st patt row **, then change to C and work a further 17(17:18)cm.

Shape shoulders

Cast off 10(12:14) sts in patt at beg of next 2 rows then 11(13:15) sts at beg of foll 4 rows. Leave rem 37 sts on a holder for back neck.

FRONT

Work as given for Back to **. Beg with a 2nd patt row, change to C and work until 16 rows fewer than on Back to start of shoulder have been worked, so ending with a 2nd row.

Shape neck

Next row (RS) Patt 44(50:56), turn and cont on these sts only, leave rem sts on a spare needle. Cast off 3 sts, at beg (neck edge) of next row and foll WS row, 2 sts at beg next 2 WS rows, then 1 st at beg of foll 2 WS rows. 32(38:44) sts. Patt a further 4 rows, so ending with a WS row.

Shape shoulder

Keeping neck edge straight, cast off 10(12:14) sts at beg of next row and 11(13:15) sts at beg of foll 2 RS rows. With RS facing, slip 13 sts at centre front on to a holder, rejoin yarn to rem sts, patt to end.

Next row P to end. Cast off 3 sts, at beg (neck edge) of next row and foll RS row, 2 sts at beg of next 2 RS rows, then 1 st at beg of foll 2 RS rows. 32(38:44) sts. Patt a further 4 rows, so ending with a RS row.

Shape shoulder

Keeping neck edge straight, cast off 10(12:14) sts at beg of next row and 11(13:15) sts at beg of foll 2 WS rows.

SLEEVES

With 4.5mm needles and A, cast on 41(44:47) sts and work in patt as given for Back for 5cm, change to 5mm needles and work a further 2 rows in patt. Taking all inc sts into patt, but keeping the k1 at each end of every RS row, inc as follows:

Inc row (RS) K1, m1, patt to last st, m1, k1. Change to B. Patt 3 rows. Inc row (RS) K1, m1, patt to last st, m1, k1. Patt 5 rows.

Inc row (RS) K1, m1, patt to last st, m1, k1. Rep the last 10 rows throughout, but change to C when 18 rows of B have been worked, so ending with a RS row. Keep changing colours every 18 rows and work until there are 77(80:83) sts.

Cont straight until sleeve measures 46cm from cast on edge, ending with a RS row. Cast off.

COLLAR

Join both shoulder seams. With RS facing, 4.5mm circular needle and C, pick up and k20 sts down left front neck, patt across 13 sts at centre front, pick up and k20 sts up right front neck, then patt across 37 sts from back neck holder. 90 sts. Place a marker to show start and end of every round. 1st round [K2, p1] to end of round. 2nd round K to end of round. Rep the last 2 rounds until collar measures approximat­ely 4cm from pick up row, ending with a 1st round. Now reverse the patt to allow for the turn over. Next round P to end of round.

Next round [P2, k1] to end of round. When collar measures 7cm from pick up, ending with a patt round, change to B and patt a further 5cm, ending with a patt round, change to A and patt a further 3cm, ending with patt round. Cast off knitwise.

TO MAKE UP

Place markers, 19(20:21)cm down from shoulder seams. With centre of cast off edge of sleeve to shoulder seam, sew on sleeves between markers. Join sleeve and side seams.
