Soothing sounds

-

The sound of plants and trees swaying in the breeze reduces your stress response, leading to a deeper sense of natural calm. The easiest way to recreate this magic in your own garden is to select some decorative or tall grasses. Try purple maiden or Japanese forest grass. Fountain grasses, reed grasses and bluestems are also worth exploring, though your best bet is to look into what’s native in your area.

Positivity boost

A UK study* found 80% of participants experienced better mental health and improved confidence from regular gardening. Try these to increase vitality:

● SMILE AT YOUR PLANTS’ PROGRESS! The physical act of smiling boosts endorphins and positive feelings.

● CALMING BREATHS Find a comfortable place to sit or stand and close your eyes. Focus on the senses you experience. Do you hear birdsong, feel sun or wind on your skin, or smell flowers? Once you’ve taken time to enjoy these sensations, focus on your breathing, intentionally slowing and deepening each breath. Breathe in deeply for a count of five, hold for two, then breathe out for five. Repeat until you feel calmer.

Healthy harvests

Having home-grown fruit, vegetables and herbs to hand means you’re more likely to eat them. Growing your own produce is a more sustainable way to eat and the taste is amazing.

● Lettuces, spinach and peppers grow well in windowsill pots – great for those with limited space.

● You can regrow kitchen scraps such as the root ends of spring onions and celery, or herb stems. Cut an inch or two above the root (or a few inches down from the top of a herb stem) and place in a small glass of water, Once the roots are growing well, transfer to soil or a pot.
