SIZES A AND B ONLY
With black
Rnd 5 3ch, 1tr in each st around, join. [40(48) sts]
With yellow
Rnd 6 3ch, 1tr in each st around, join.
Rnds 7 and 8 (7 to 10) Rpt Rnds 5 and 6 once (twice) more, keeping stripe sequence correct, thus ending with a rnd worked in yellow.
If making for a child over 2 months, crochet one more rnd using black. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
SIZE C ONLY
Rnd 5 3ch, (2tr in next st, 3tr) 11 times, 2tr in next st, 2tr, join. [60 sts]
Rnd 6 3ch, 1tr in each st around, join.
With black
Rnd 7 1tr in each st around, join.
With yellow
Rnd 8 1tr in each st around, join.
Rnds 9 to 14 Rpt Rnds 6 and 7 three more times, keeping striped sequence correct, thus ending with a rnd worked in yellow.
Fasten off, weave in ends.
WINGS (make 4) With white

Rnd 1 Magic ring, 3ch (counts as 1tr), 11tr in ring, join. [12 sts]
Rnd 2 3ch, 2tr in each of next 11 sts, 1tr in same st as starting 3ch, join. [24 sts]
Fasten off size A only, leaving enough yarn for sewing.
SIZE C ONLY
Rnd 3 3ch, (2tr in next st, 1tr) 11 times, 2tr in next st, join. [36 sts]
Fasten off, leaving enough yarn for sewing.

If you have made white eyes, use a little of the black yarn to create a pupil in the middle. Sew these on to the hat. Sew the wings on to the back of the hat, using lots of yarn so they are quite sturdy (see left). Embroider a little smile with either red or black yarn.
