Often found in super-hydrating skincare serums, hyaluronic acid has a volumising effect on the skin, but also ‘wraps around the hair fibre to keep lengths and ends soft, smooth and plump’, says Elisabeth Bouhadana, L’oréal Paris global scientific director. Use it when hair is damp, as, ‘If applied to dry hair, it will draw moisture out of the hair shaft rather than locking it in,’ she adds.

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAS) are used in scalp treatments to shift dead skin and reduce dandruff, but they have other benefits.
