WHAT TO WASH WITH
Invest a little (but not a lot) in your hair-washing regime and reap the rewards with every rinse.
FOR PLUMPING
Often found in super-hydrating skincare serums, hyaluronic acid has a volumising effect on the skin, but also ‘wraps around the hair fibre to keep lengths and ends soft, smooth and plump’, says Elisabeth Bouhadana, L’oréal Paris global scientific director. Use it when hair is damp, as, ‘If applied to dry hair, it will draw moisture out of the hair shaft rather than locking it in,’ she adds.

Clean + Protect Hyaluronic Conditioner, £7.99.
FOR THICKENING
Collagen isn’t just a skincare add-on – it’s now making its way into your shampoo. This is welcome news for thinning hair, as collagen amino acids give a protein boost that strengthens hair from the inside out.
TRY Absolute Collagen Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner, £18 each; OGX Thick & Full+ Biotin & Collagen Shampoo, £6.99; Boots Ingredients Volume Conditioner with Acacia Collagen, £4.50.
FOR SMOOTHING
Sugarcane-derived hemisqualane had Queer Eye’s
Jonathan Van Ness at hello when developing his haircare range, and now the lightweight ingredient features in every product in his JVN line-up. ‘It improves texture, shine and strength without weighing the hair down,’ says Jonathan. Hemisqualane is also biodegradable, making it a better choice for the environment.
TRY JVN Undamage Strengthening Shampoo, £16; Living Proof No Frizz Conditioner, £25.
FOR COLOUR CARE
Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAS) are used in scalp treatments to shift dead skin and reduce dandruff, but they have other benefits. Kérastase’s Chroma Absolu range has lactic acid to strengthen bleached hair and trap dulling minerals. ‘Hair’s natural ph is somewhat acidic,’ explains Redken artist George Garcia, so acidic haircare helps restore balance after alkalinising colouring processes.
TRY Kérastase Chroma Absolu Bain Riche Chroma Respect Shampoo, £22.40; Gallinée Soothing Hair Cleansing Cream, £23; M&S Apothecary Detox Conditioner, £7.50.➺
