Clive Mitten is preparing two releases for his new project C:Live Collective, the first of which will be out on March 1. The five-track The Age Of Insanity will be followed by a double album, The Fifth Estate, in the autumn. Mitten promises he’ll be making further downloads available soon, but, he warns, the new material doesn’t sound anything like his former band.

“It’s a complete break from my past,” he confirms.

“I’ve been subject to a lot of influences over the last 30 years: classical, American classical and dance music, such as Orbital, Underworld and Pendulum who are big influences on what I do now. They’ve all been re-cooked in my head and it’s come out sounding quite different; it’s still progressive because it’s pushing some musical boundaries which people wouldn’t normally expect. There are sections where I’m using a lot of strings and some brass, and in other places, it’s purely orchestral. There’s another section which is pure dance and there are all sorts of other styles that crop up, but I would not classify it in the world of symphonic rock.

“The album also includes a complete rework of [Twelfth Night’s] We Are Sane but it’s a very different beast from the one people have known in the past. There’s also a 20-minute dance remix by me.”

Mitten began work on the C:Live Collective over a year ago, and the six-piece features former members of Twelfth Night support band LaHost – Stephen Bennett, Mark Spencer and drummer Fudge Smith – as well as singer James Mann, whose late father Geoff was Twelfth Night’s original vocalist. They will make their live debut with the project at a secret London show this spring, which will be followed by a performance at Winter’s End Festival on April 28.

In the meantime, author Andrew Wild has confirmed he’s updating Twelfth Night’s official biography Play On. The revised edition will be published independently later this year and will be preceded by a new Twelfth Night ‘best of’ triple album entitled Fact And Fiction which will be out via F2. The release of the album and book coincide with the 40th anniversary of the band’s very first show.
