LOST CROWNS

Every Night Something Happens BAD ELEPHANT Progressive pop royalty from Knifeworld, Prescott, NSRO and more.

The brainchild of singerguitarist Richard Larcombe (Stars In Battledress/Cardiacs), Lost Crowns are being touted as an avant-psychedelic supergroup thanks to a rollcall including keyboardist Josh Perl (Knifeworld), bassist Charlie Cawood (Knifeworld, Tonochrome, My Tricksy Spirit), singer-keyboardist Rhodri Marsden (Prescott, Scritti Politti), clarinettist Nicola Baigent (North Sea Radio Orchestra) and drummer Keepsie. The band follow a simple formula on most of the eight tracks, established from the off by 10-minute opener Housemaid’s Knees, which sees the keyboard players weigh in with big, jagged prog jazz riffs that often sound heisted from Mahavishnu Orchestra or certain Mothers albums, pulled every which way with discordant flourishes designed to disconcert. The overall vibe on She Saved Me, Midas X-Ray or Dandy Doesn’t Know is late 60s to early 70s with touches of Principal Edwards Magic Theatre in the bearded vocals and small furry animals in loincloths circle dancing on folkier, Incredible String Band-tinged outings such as Sound As Colour. They seem to be having a blast colliding these disparate styles. You may too.
