OCEANICA

OneDark Progressive gears

Enochian Theory frontman plots next chapter.

Oceanica is the new project from Enochian Theory frontman Ben Harris-Hayes, with OneDark the first instalment in an intended ‘triptych’ of albums he will release. Although he has had some help from collaborators, it’s essentially a solo work, being engineered, recorded, produced and mixed by Harris-Hayes himself.

For a first solo release, it’s certainly impressive, though it has to be said that Harris-Hayes’ vocals, as you’d expect, are the most developed thing on the album. With Enochian Theory breaking up after a long hiatus and creative deadlock, it can be assumed that OneDark represents the purest version of the Brightonian’s current creative vision as a songwriter. The multi-part harmonies on Amounting to Nothing and 8 are simply electric, but the guitar parts by comparison can feel a little by-the-numbers. Some of the most interesting moments are when he really moves outside his comfort zone, such as the brilliant electronic dance number Got A Feeling, or the industrial Towards the Sun. Though it’s a far cry from Enochian Theory, fans of Harris-Hayes as a songwriter will find a lot to like, as well as some new surprises.
