TUSMØRKE DREAM OF REALMS BEYOND
New album Nordisk Krim explores the world of prehistoric bog bodies.
Norwegian folk-proggers Tusmørke will release new album Nordisk Krim on February 26 via Karisma, in which they explore the world of bog bodies – people who were thrown into marshland as a form of sacrifice thousands of years ago.
“They’re frozen glimpses of the transition from our world to the realms beyond,” says leader Benedikt ‘Benediktator’ Momrak. “They are fixed in the moment of crossing over the threshold to the gods. The bog was a means of transcending mortality.”
Some of the material has existed in various forms since 2000, but Momrak says the new presentations are “darker, more leaning towards heavy metal” than previous works, and also feature experimentation with “tape delay, ring modulators, other analogue effects, field recordings and so on.”
He highlights some of the rhythmic patterns, especially on Mysteries Of Sacrifice, as worth looking out for. “I want the listener to feel elation, having escaped dense production and macabre lyrics,” he says. “I guess the word is catharsis. And many fans will be happy to finally hear these songs recorded, since different versions have been played live from 2015.”
Momrak says his inspiration goes back to seeing human remains in museums when he was a child. He adds, “I would have loved to become a bog body when I grew up! It’s a strong look, the exhibitions give you plenty of exposure and people can study you and actually learn something.”
