VAN GIERSBERGEN AND FINDLAY PLAN ACOUSTIC TOUR

Their 2022 European tour starts in London.

Anneke van Giersbergen can’t wait to reconnect with her live audience when she tours Europe with Heather Findlay next year.

The 18-date acoustic road trip, including an opening show at London’s Garage on April 20, will be the first time she’s performed material from new album The Darkest Skies Are The Brightest.

“It’s going to be strange,” she says. “They’re very personal songs, and usually I’d have played some of them live before recording them. I’ve always been able to play a new song to my audience and trust them not to put it on YouTube, because it’s not finished, and also I might fuck up!”

She laughs at the idea of wanting to re-record the album after the songs have come to life on tour. “They will change,” she says.

She expects upbeat track Survive and opening number Agape to come across well, although admits there’s a lot to learn about the latter song. “My producer played the guitar part on the album, so I have to learn it. But I have time.”

Van Giersbergen says she’s been listening to Findlay’s records by way of preparation, looking for ideas for songs they could perform together. “We know each other from the Ayreon gigs, so maybe we can do an Ayreon song together at the end of the night,” she suggests.

“Doing shows is what I love most. I love being in the studio, I love writing, but the time with my audience is the best.”
