Tributes have been paid to Florian Pilkington-Miksa, Curved Air’s original drummer, who died on May 20 following several bouts of pneumonia.

Sonja Kristina, Curved Air’s singer, said: “His drumming identified the tracks as Curved Air. He is a great drummer – on a par with Ginger, Bonham and Mitchell in the context of the power, emotion and complexity he created with us.”

Stewart Copeland, who succeeded him in the band, added: “As a drummer, he was deft yet powerful, fully at ease with the crazy prog meters.”

Pilkington-Miksa was originally in Sisyphus with Darryl Way and Francis Monkman, which became Curved Air in 1970. He played on their first three albums and the hit single Back Street Luv, before the band split in 1972. He rejoined briefly in 1974 and 1990, and returned again in 2008, playing live and on record with the reformed band until 2017. He also appeared on their album North Star (2014) and at the 45th anniversary show of debut album Air

Conditioning in 2015.
