THREE COLOURS DARK

Love’s Lost Property FIREFLY MUSIC

-

IProg duo get more sophisticated on their second album.

f 2020’s debut album, The Science Of Goodbye, suggested that Three Colours Dark – aka Rachel Cohen and Jonathan Edwards – offered much in the melodic sense, then this follow-up finds them getting more adventurous.

This is evident on an impressive cover of Duran Duran’s Ordinary World, with Dave Gregory brought in to add his guitar charm. It’s more obvious on Eye For An Eye, where Steve Simmons’ tenor saxophone adds power to the passion in Cohen’s vocals. But all nine tracks showcase the band’s restless desire to give the music more depth. The way in which Cohen’s mellifluous vocal approach complements Edwards’ keyboard command ensures that there’s much to explore. The seeming gentility on a song such as The Circus is slightly misleading, because it has an underlying toughness which is highlighted by Kate Ronconi’s violin part.

Throughout, Tim Hamill’s guitar and bass add extra elements to the artistic palette, and gives the Cohen/Edwards alliance the chance to shine. There are hints of the pair’s previous bands Karnataka and The Reasoning, but

Three Colours Dark are never overshadowed by past glories.
