HAWKWIND: A VISUAL BIOGRAPHY
Martin Popoff WYMER PUBLISHING
Expand your mind with facts and visions.
Veteran of the music book project, Martin Popoff encapsulates more than 50 years of Hawkwind, their dizzying array of characters and side-projects, experiments with sound and visuals, and the highs and lows of this epitome of ‘cult band’ with a true devotee’s dedication and chutzpah. A hefty 224-page tome, Hawkwind: A Visual Biography bundles archive photos, mostly previously unpublished, with posters, ticket stubs, adverts, promo material and more, taking readers chronologically from the earliest days of this band of space hippies through to the present day. The photos are fascinating, the factoids a veritable avalanche of names, places, happenings, recording sessions and digressions. It’s not exhaustive in the sense that it isn’t a list of every gig, setlist, personal spat and drug consumed – Popoff has made decisions about what to include, thus no mention of friend of Prog and TV presenter Matthew Wright’s live appearances with the band, or Hawkwind’s storming performance at Loreley in 2016, one of their biggest festival appearances of the last decade.
However, for fans or those interested in an evolution from champions of the counter-culture to British rock legends, this is a superb companion piece to any Hawkwind collection.
