SIMON COLLINS BACK WITH EMOLECULE

Ex-Sound Of Contact men Collins and Kelly Nordstrom return with new band debut.

Former Sound Of Contact members Simon Collins and Kelly Nordstrom continue their long-standing partnership with their new band, Emolecule. Their debut record, The Architect, releases on InsideOut on February 10, and Collins describes it as a “dynamic, left-field album.”

“It’s hard to nail it down to one genre,” he tells Prog. “We’ve co-written a lot of music together over the years, but this is on a different level.”

The pair first met 18 years ago when working on Collins’ second solo album, Time For Truth, and The Architect will be the fifth record they’ve worked on together. “What we each bring to the table is very different,” Collins explains. “Kelly brought in a lot of the progressive metal side of things, which I love, and I came up with a lot of the more accessible stuff. Those influences came together to make something really interesting. What’s so appealing about the album is that there’s something in there for everyone.”

The roots of Emolecule stem back to 2020, two years after drummer/vocalist Collins and guitarist Nordstrom left Sound Of Contact. They were working on Collins’ Becoming Human album at his studio in Ireland, and when ideas began flowing back and forth, the new project began to take shape.

“Kelly’s material blew my mind,” Collins recalls, “so we starting helping to finish each other’s songs and it built very organically from there. We made a point of wanting to do everything ourselves this time. Kelly plays guitars, keyboards and bass and I focused on drums, vocals and keyboards with us both co-producing the record. We didn’t want any outside help.”

He describes The Architect as a concept album, with both it and the band name relating to the exploration of the science of emotion: “I think it’s going to resonate with a lot of people. It’s full of human stories and experiences.”

And Collins says that both he and Nordstrom are in this band for the long haul. “We’ve been working very hard to get to this point in our careers where we can write an album like this. We want to keep banging albums out and play this material live. We’ve been working with Wayne Joyner, who’s done a lot of the Dream Theater videos animation, so we can go out on the stage and play the album from beginning to end and create a fantastic experience. It’s just a matter of demand.” POW

“This will resonate with people – it’s full of human stories and experiences.”
