Create a mini greenhouse with paper plants

Clare Lewis shows you how to make a desktop greenhouse filled with paper plants.

Project Calm - - Contents -

Create a little calm oasis with your own pristine greenhouse and foliage. Keep it on your desk to remind you to lovingly cultivate your own plants, whether herbs on a sunny windowsill or a vegetable patch outside, and in the metaphoric sense too, of nurturing yourself and others, and allowing yourself to bloom and grow.

You will need: A metal ruler, a pair of scissors, a craft knife, cutting mat, all-purpose crafts glue, tweezers (optional) and bone folder (optional).

Step 1

Print the pages of greenhouse and plant templates onto thin card, and cut out the roof and two side/end pieces. Using a metal ruler and the blade of a pair of scissors, or a sharp craft knife, carefully score along all the fold lines. Don’t forget all the tabs, too.

Step 4

Next, it’s time to put your nimble fingers to good use! Cut out the five terracotta plant pots. Score along the fold lines and press down to get neat folds. Assemble with glue. You’ll see that each pot has a flap so you can rest it at a slight angle on your desk.

Step 2

Using the craft knife, cut out all the windowpanes. Work slowly and carefully, paying particular attention to the corners so you get neat angles. You’ll need to work freehand around the top of the curved door to achieve a neat, flowing line.

Step 5

Now is the chance to really enjoy some meditative artwork. Cut out the plants using a craft knife, concentrating on the wavy, organic shapes to create all the individual leaves. There’s no rush, just take pleasure in the process.

Step 3

Now comes the exciting bit of putting your greenhouose together! Make sure the folds are crisp - press down with your fingers or use a bone folder. Using our photo as a guide, assemble the side/end pieces, sticking the tabs together with glue. Then attach the roof.

Step 6

Attach the leaves to the inside of the pots – use a pair of tweezers if it’s a bit fiddly. Attach the plants to the inside of the greenhouse, with a few leaves under the roof. Arrange the plant pots inside and outside your greenhouse to finish.
