The UK’s leading expert on military strategy quickly became the go-to voice on Ukraine. His analysis of the latest developments on the ground and the relative strength of both sides has proven indispensable since Putin chose to launch the most dangerous European conflict since 1945. Having sat on the inquiry into the Iraq War— serving in more recent years as an emeritus professor of war studies at King’s College London—his outlet of choice is now the Substack newsletter Comment is Freed, run jointly with his son, Prospect columnist Sam Freedman. The elder Freedman’s expertise on nuclear warfare will, it is to be hoped, remain purely theoretical.
