Born to a miner and a nurse in County Durham, Fiona Hill’s testimony at Donald Trump’s first impeachment hearing in 2019 briefly made her one of the most famous faces in her adopted America. The foreign policy expert, who advised presidents George W Bush and Barack Obama before Trump, accused the Trump administration of pursuing a shadow foreign policy strategy intended to benefit the president rather than US national interests. Hill, author of Mr Putin: Operative in the Kremlin, remains one of the most compelling voices on Russia, warning that Ukraine is the frontline in a hot war on western democracy. Putin, she argues, will not stop until he has won.
