Don’t hide your shy light

Use your shyness superpower to its full potential in social situations that suit you, says born introvert and coach Lucy Griffiths

-

When I say I’m an introvert, the response is usually, ‘Are you?’ I may appear to be friendly and confident, but I need alone time to recharge. Perhaps you’re like me and you’ve learned to switch on your confident beam, but the reality is that you’re shy. Maybe you enjoy chatting to someone one-to-one or going out for a cosy dinner… then heading home to unwind.

When I worked as a foreign correspondent, my nervousness was frequently concealed behind a large glass of vino. When I decided to quit the hangovers 10 years ago, my prop disappeared, and I was left with the bare bones of the real me.

It’s easy to get consumed with the fear of networking and decline invitations. Regardless of where I am, I have to give myself a firm but gentle talking-to, because I could easily just hide in the bathroom or let the fear of feeling like the outsider hold me back at networking events.

Socialising for introverts: Seek out events that make you feel good.

Whether it’s bonding over breakfast or crafting clubs, you can find a community that supports and uplifts you.

It is easy to be swayed by extroverts who assume you’re like them and can party all night.

Be kind to yourself and ensure that you practise self-care to nourish yourself and fulfil your needs.

Make the most of your shyness superpower.

Being shy means you can usually read the room, you’re more empathetic with others and you’re a great listener. Being shy isn’t a social disorder, it’s what makes you special.
