MINDS TO REST
A GARDENER’S WORK is never done. There are a multitude of outdoor activities you could do over winter: cleaning tools, buying seeds, building new veg beds, tree maintenance or even sorting out the compost heaps. But why would you?
For me, the festive season and the shorter days provide the excuse that I’ve needed all year – it’s time to slow down and fully recharge. This is a month laden with additional pressures for most people, full of frantic shopping and prepping. Before you know it, you are swamped and it’s no longer much of a holiday season. Make time to enjoy the simple things in life: good food, kind company and fresh air. wreath. This is a tradition that I have adopted and I find it fulfilling on so many levels. It clears your head and helps you focus on nature, while tapping into your imagination and creativity. Always remember to be respectful of the land you explore.
For those who are unable to amble around the countryside, invite nature indoors. I never get through December without acquiring new houseplants – they really add festive ambience and make me happy. Also consider giving someone the gift of plants – there are some magnificent options available.
Sticking to simple, nature-themed decor is also an easy way to bring the peaceful outdoors into your home. Keep it simple – relax, eat, be mindful and enjoy yourself. Before you know it, the shortest day has passed and it’s time for a new gardening year.
Happy holidays!
