London has always been Albarn’s greatest muse, and 13 years after Parklife’s cartoonish portrait of the city, he returned to his old stomping ground with a darker state-of-the-capital address. The Good, The Bad & The Queen found Damon alchemising gold from the unlikeliest of sources – The Clash’s Paul Simonon, Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen and former Verve guitarist Simon Tong. They evoked a different kind of Cool Britannia on Kingdom Of Doom, one that traced an invisible line between run-down council estates, the warmongers in Number 10 and London’s eternal occult underbelly.
