Travelling Man

Restless soul Ben Howard on the places where he likes to hang his hat.

Q (UK) - - Ben Howard -

Howard visited the Central American country more than once in the last few years, where he entertained the idea of becoming a poet. “But it turns out that I’m not very good at it.”

Pink Pearl Island

An island off Nicaragua’s East Coast that Howard nearly bought – or at least his girlfriend did. “I don’t think I’m quite ready to be an island owner. I’ll leave it to Richard Branson.”

Howard grew up in Devon and still has a house nearby. “It’s beautiful down there, especially in the countryside. You can be on your own little trip down there.”

Noonday Dream’s cover has Howard crouching pensively in a circle of stones, shot in the Canary Islands. “It references Richard Long and the Land Artist movement. People using natural materials and outdoor spaces in their art.”

Noonday Dream was partly recorded at Le Manoir de Leon, an hour’s drive from the French resort. “We’d come here most summers when I was younger. It’s just one of those nice places where the sea meets a really flat bit of land and the forest.”

Some of the photos for Howard’s debut album Every Kingdom were shot in the West African country. “It’s wild,” he says. “Great surfing, great music. I dream of going back there.”

Howard spent a few months in 2017 and earlier this year living in the French capital. “I like the gruffness of the French. If you start smoking and someone else doesn’t like it, it’s their problem not yours.”

Another prime surfing location. Howard went offgrid there earlier this year. “I love the sea, the wild nature of it. It can be dangerous, of course, especially if you’re going out where the sea wants to kill people. I try to avoid that.”
