“Faced with the prospect of spend­ing two days shad­ow­ing Popcaan, the lat­est ruf­fian su­per­star out of Ja­maica, I was a lit­tle wor­ried that we might be on reg­gae time. Such anx­i­ety only pun­ished my own prej­u­dice, as he turned out to be a fun-lov­ing, yet highly fo­cused 29- year-old, wise be­yond his years. Sure, his time-keep­ing wasn’t the sharpest, and he smoked enough ganja to fell a herd of bi­son, but he didn’t be­come with­drawn or psy­chotic with it, clearly en­joy­ing ex­plain­ing him­self, his life and his mu­sic. I came to un­der­stand how this pocket dance­hall dy­namo con­jures both bed­room bump’n’grind and spir­i­tual an­thems. As our sec­ond con­ver­sa­tion wound up, pho­tog­ra­pher Oliver Halfin asked if he could take our pic­ture to­gether. ‘Yah man,’ he said, ‘An­drew’s my G!’ As you can prob­a­bly see, I’ve never been any­one’s G be­fore…”
