NILE RODGERS & CHIC

IT’S ABOUT TIME VIRGIN, OUT 28 SEPTEMBER

Q (UK) - - Review -

Le Freak brings back the Good Times. Yowsah! Nile Rodgers has had a remarkable 21st century, beating cancer twice, gracing Daft Punk’s Get Lucky, and becoming one of the planet’s bestloved live acts playing the anthems he recorded with Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson. But the disco deity’s new Chic – with bassist Jerry Barnes and drummer Ralph Rolle – deserves its own album. Hearing Rodgers’s right hand chucking at the Stratocaster he calls The Hitmaker is a privilege on this comeback record. Modern production tricks (from Mura Masa and Nao, among others), rap interludes (Stefflon Don, LunchMoney Lewis) and a vocal cast including Lady Gaga and Elton John can’t distract from the signature style of Nile and co. Timeless and effortless, it’s unmistakably them. C’est Chic. ★★★★ SIMON PRICE Listen To: Sober | Boogie All Night
