“I went to drama school in 2002 and I met a girl called Mattie who introduced me to ‘grown-up music’. At home my parents didn’t really listen to folk or jazz, my mum played a lot of country and my dad was into Motown. So Blue felt like serious music. We lived together for about five years and we’d listen to this record hundreds of times, often crying over it, and usually while we were in the kitchen because Mattie’s an amazing cook. Blue is the soundtrack to my early 20s – it reminds me of the excitement of moving to London and finding someone you know will be a friend for life.”
