LAURA JANE GRACE & THE DEVOURING MOTHERS

Q (UK) - - Review | New Albums - GEORGE GARNER

BOUGHT TO ROT BLOODSHOT, OUT 9 NOVEMBER Against Me! singer cuts loose to stunning effect.

You can hardly blame Laura Jane Grace for taking a breather right now. Against Me!’s last two LPs exhibited confessional songwriting at its most unflinching, detailing Grace’s transition from a life lived previously as Tom Gabel. Bought To Rot is, then, something of a palette cleanser: both wider in scope and lighter in tone. While Grace’s idea of levity still involves dissecting relationships (Valeria Golina), here the soundtrack is more jangly alt-rock than caustic punk. Best of all is I Hate Chicago, a personal city tour which showcases Grace at her acid-tongued finest.
