ELASTIC DAYS SUB POP, OUT 9 NOVEMBER Dinosaur Jr frontman explores his quieter side again.

There’s long been a clear delineation between J Mascis’s work with Dinosaur Jr and his solo output. While the former’s melodies are normally hidden beneath ear-splitting noise, his work under his own name has been characterised by gentle acoustic strumming, augmented by notably more concise guitar solos. His third album for Sub Pop is a case in point, the likes of I Went Dust and Cut Stranger as pretty as they are streamlined. He can take his more laid-back approach too far, however, sounding as if he might be about to nod off during Web So Dense. Yet the moments of genuine loveliness more than compensate for the occasional bouts of narcolepsy.
