THE LIMIÑANAS

Q (UK) - - Awards 2018 -

French duo explore their more outré corners for a second time. The Limiñanas operate within a musical Venn diagram where Velvets-y psych rock, hazy desert blues and smoky, Gallic cool coalesce. I’ve Got Trouble In Mind Vol. 2 is their second collection of unreleased material and rarities. Given the nature of these cuts, there’s a spirit of exploration here that can be absent on the pair’s studio albums. Opener The Mirror, for instance, swirls atmospherically around an intriguing spoken-word story from actor Kirk Lake before lurching into a warped, bad trip take on late-’ 60s Kinks, featuring kindred spirit Anton Newcombe (Two Sisters). It’s not all essential, but there’s plenty to show that experimentation and style needn’t be mutually exclusive.
