YXNG BANE

Q (UK) - - Q Review New Albums -

Genre-mashing mixtape from pop-adjacent London rapper.

East London rapper Yxng Bane knows the value of having his fingers in the pop pie. Having first garnered attention with an Ed Sheeran remix and an Afro-swing ode to Rihanna, he’s since collaborated with MØ and Ella Eyre among others. On his latest mixtape, he bounces from trapfuelled attitude to poppy flirtation, his trademark Afrobeats and the odd morose ballad like a child who has just demolished a family-sized bag of Tangfastics. What stands out throughout, however, is Bane’s knack for earworms – such as the assuredly funky Needed Time – and his honest lyrics, with Better focusing in on family strife and friends lost to prison. There’s lots going on here, but it’s all rather great. HANNAH J DAVIES Listen To: Needed Time | Better | Problem
