MORE NEW FILMS

GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY
Available on Netflix from 23 December
Daniel Craig returns as sleuth Benoit Blanc in this sequel to 2019’s acclaimed whodunnit Knives Out. This time, Blanc is in Greece with a new gang of suspects including Edward Norton and Kate Hudson.
THE PALE BLUE EYE
In cinemas from 23 December; on Netflix from 6 January
A detective (Christian Bale, right) teams up with the young Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling) to solve grisly murders around the West Point US Army training academy. “I loved the notion of the Poe origin story, just thinking: how did Poe become this fascinating figure?” Bale tells RT. “It’s historical fiction in that Poe really did go to West Point — there just weren’t all these murders!”
MATILDA
In cinemas now; coming to Netflix in 2023
Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly’s raucous stage version of the Roald Dahl classic gets a footstomping big-screen adaptation, starring Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull and Alisha Weir in the title role.
“Matilda uses stories to escape into magic,” explains composer and co-creator Minchin. “We get to go with her in the film in a way that you can’t do on stage.”
IF THESE WALLS COULD SING
Available on Disney+ from 16 December
Photographer and film-maker Mary McCartney directs a new documentary about the famous Abbey Road recording studios, with contributions from the likes of Elton John, Shirley Bassey and — of course — her dad Paul.
STRANGE WORLD
In cinemas now; coming soon to Disney+
Disney’s latest familyfriendly animation sees three generations of explorers journey to the centre of their world in a day-glo riff on Jules Verne-style adventures.
“Obviously it’s sort of a myth that we all understood,” says Jake Gyllenhaal (below), who voices reluctant farmer-turned adventurer Searcher Clade. “But the story also came so intimately from our director Don Hall’s family. His father’s a farmer, and so he brought a lot of those struggles I think he has within his own family. I was really moved by it.”
GUILLERMO DEL TORO’S PINOCCHIO
Available on Netflix from 9 December
The Oscar-winning director creates a dark, stop-motion take on the classic fable, set in Mussolini’s Fascist Italy. “Guillermo tells a dark, adult story,” Christoph Waltz, who voices the villainous Count Volpe, tells RT. “But he beautifully employs a fairy tale to do
it. It’s brilliant.”
I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY
In cinemas from 26 December
British actor Naomi Ackie busts out her best high notes in this glossy biopic that tells the story of ill-fated singer Whitney Houston.
