“This is the ideal future for a lot of powerful people, where humans are no longer social mammals but angry, divided, consumer units,” says academic Pascal (played by Robert Bathurst) in a flashback to an interview given to Maggie Philbin (playing herself) on Tomorrow’s World. He’s talking about a world without any money. Flash forward to Valentine’s Day 2025 and his prediction appears to have come true, unleashing a global panic. Unfortunately for us, Pascal is knocked down at the very moment he’s on the phone to HM Treasury, offering a solution. Over the next five weeks, a frighteningly believable vision of societal breakdown is played out, including a heavily pregnant woman desperate to escape her abusive partner and a grifter who sees the ensuing chaos as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It seems to be part of antiquity, but it was actually in our lifetime that whales were generally regarded as killers. The 1977 film Orca...Killer Whale is now rarely shown. In those days the sole purpose of this magnificent creature was to be butchered for its by-products. Thank goodness for the New Agers and their discovery of whale song, and the fact some societies have always revered whales. Eliza Lomas reports from the southern shores of Vietnam, where the mammals are considered gods of the oceans and protectors of fishermen. She visits whale temples and joins a festival at which whales are honoured. The roots of this admirable belief may surprise you. DAVID MCGILLIVRAY
