SCI-FI DRAMA

Series 2 available from Thursday A wilfully confusing mash-up of Western drama and time-bending science fiction returns for a second season, with that big hole still there on the land of grizzled rancher Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin). Is the bottomless pit simply a portal to the past and future, or does it have more to say about the family relationships at the heart of the series? Season one revelations included that a character is much older than we thought and two others are the same person; things are about to get a whole lot weirder.

Available now Anne Hathaway is a delight in this enjoyable romcom. She plays Solène, a 40-year-old, recently divorced mum. At Coachella festival with her teenage daughter, she bumps into Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), a heart-throb from a successful boy band. Despite their age difference, the two hit it off, but is it love? The film is tame in comparison to Robinne Lee’s novel, and the on-off romance is overly familiar. But the leads sizzle, and there are enough spicy moments to set pulses racing.

Available now British writer/director Jonathan Glazer ( Under the Skin) adapts Martin Amis’s 2014 novel with this striking, Bafta-winning film set in 1940s Auschwitz. Dramatising the lives of real Nazis, it revolves around Rudolf and Hedwig Höss (Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller), who live in a house just metres from the camp. Glazer chooses not to show the murder of Auschwitz’s prisoners, instead using the atrocities as a backdrop to the Höss’s mundane lives. The artful approach and cold sense of remove make this a deeply disturbing depiction of the banality of evil, and a Holocaust drama like no other.
