INDUSTRIAL SHUNTER ROUND-UP

-

MARCH 7 saw the roll-out of Bagnall 0-4-0 No. 3210 Myfanwy after its threeyear overhaul. Built in 1962 as works number 3211 (started at the Bagnall Works in Stafford but completed at Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns in Darlington), it first went to work at ROF Pembrey but later in its career was heavily modified for work on the London Underground Jubilee Line extension, including a drastically-lowered cab.

Acquired for preservation by Mark Civil in 2003, it wasmoved to the Foxfield Railway where a start was made on returning it to its original profile. Whilst a lot of preliminary work was done by Mark and his son Phil, things stopped in early 2016 with the sudden and unexpected death of Mark.

After discussions with friends at the Chasewater Railway, Phil moved

No. 3211 there in late 2016 and work began in earnest on the locomotive, with Phil leading the way. The rebuild has been undertaken over the past three years, the final touch being the addition of the all-over wasp stripes, just as it was delivered in 1962. For all the work and the quality of the restoration Phil quite rightly won the Young Volunteer of the Year award at the recent HRA Awards.

A small team at the Midland Railway-Butterley has been beavering away on the former Castle Donington Power Station shunter, Andrew Barclay No. 416. The current lockdown has stopped progress, but there is now only a small list of outstanding items to do before it can return to service. The engine was started at the end of February, and the loco made its first moves under its own power in nearly 11 years at the start of March.

It has been returned to CEGB blue livery for the first time in preservation and once again wears the full CEGB Castle Donington Power Station No.4 lettering. Initially this was planned to be transfers, as there was no information on the original size and font of the lettering, however whilst sanding the doors for the repaint the original lettering was revealed, with enough left to make a template for the new lettering.
