■ ETCHES PARK OPENS:

East Midlands Trains opened its new

£22 million maintenance depot at Etches Park in Derby on May 20. It was built in 17 months and included a threeroad shed with synchronised jacks to simultaneously lift all seven coaches of a Class 222 for bogie or power unit changes. An adjacent building housed a £1million wheel lathe, and next to that were sidings for fuelling trains and emptying controlled emission tanks. The depot had been unofficially open since March 8, operated by Bombardier and coexisting with the original fiveroad depot on the Etches Park site, on which a further £250,000 was spent to improve the BR-era facilities. The plan was that the older shed would concentrate on Class 156/158 DMUs, while EMT’s HSTs would continue to be shedded and serviced at Neville Hill, Leeds.
