Class by class notable workings.

CLASS 20

FOLLOWING a couple of years away from the main line and on hire to DCR, Type 1 Class 20 No. 20901 partnered No. 20118 Saltburn-by-the-Sea on the 6Z21/15.23 Brandon-Chaddesden on June 3, conveying 24 empty JNAs.

No. 20901 last worked on June 18, 2019, when along with Nos. 20905 and 66787 it took the barrier vehicles used on the final London Underground stock move from Banbury to Derby Litchurch Lane prior to the Type 1s running light to Barrow Hill. Nos. 20118+20901 were back in action on June 17, hauling the 6Z20/17.52 Kellingley CollieryChaddesden with 13 JRA hoppers extricated from store in the weedstrewn sidings at Kellingley.

CLASS 37

DIRECT Rail Services' No. 37422 hauled a ballast cleaner south on

June 1, forming the 6Z23/11.10 Tyne Yard-Worksop Yard, one of several noteworthy items of ‘freight' work for the English Electric Type 3s in June. The following day Nos. 37425 and 37424 moved 10 autoballasters on the 6P02/16.31 Whitemoor-Rayleigh, while on June 11 Nos. 37038+37402 had charge of the 6G94/12.22 Basford HallBescot and later the 6K97/19.33 Toton Yard-Basford Hall. For No. 37038 it was a very rare day out this year. Having powered the 6G06/19.39 Basford HallBescot on June 14, Nos. 37425+37402 took 6C02 to Carlisle next morning and traversed the Settle & Carlisle line hauling the 6K05/12.46 Carlisle YardBasford Hall on June 15 and again the following afternoon. Another pairing, Nos. 37424+37423, covered the 6G94/6K97 diagram on June 24 and the 6G94/12.22 Basford Hall-Bescot portion next day before running light back to Crewe. Another ‘37/4',

No. 37419, took to the Highland main line with No. 66422 on June 5, hauling the 4H47/05.05 Mossend-Inverness, while large logo blue No. 37418 ventured onto the Cambrian (June 22) in company with No. 97304 on the 6C72/06.13 Basford Hall-Newtown, just one of many engineering trains over the route in June.

The attractive green duo of Nos. 37667+37521 set off on a weekend sortie on June 10, starting with the 1Z11/10.28 Crewe-Hereford leg via the Severn Tunnel. Back at Crewe they headed for Anglesey next day, later forming the 1Z16/13.14 Llandudno Junction-Carlisle, all part of the Branch Line Society's ‘Three Peaks from a

Seat' tour. On June 12 the train ran from Carlisle to Oban and back to Crewe. Both Type 3s found themselves back in Oban just seven days later on the 1Z68/17.46 from Euston (having replaced No. 90002 at Crewe), reaching the Argyll and Bute township shortly before 10.00 on June 19 and heading back to Crewe with the empty coaches.

West Coast's Nos. 37685+37706 were similarly in regular partnership beginning on June 10 when hauling the 1Z24/06.00 Carnforth-Scarborough via Copy Pit as far as Holgate Sidings for steam haulage to the Yorkshire resort. In ‘top and tail' mode they formed the ‘Dalesman' 1Z52/07.35 Chester-Carlisle to Hellifield on June 22, picking up the return working at Carnforth and then taking another ‘Scarborough Spa Express' duty to York on June 24, this time making the evening return journey with No. 47746 attached at the rear of the train. Other workings of note include No. 37116 moving HST power cars Nos. 43045+43060 from Leicester to Burton Wetmore on June 14, while No. 37608 made the long trek to Dundee to collect four condemned Mk.3 trailer coaches for transit to Rotherham Masborough on June 16. The following morning No. 37716 set sail from Carlisle

with six former ScotRail Mk.2 coaches destined for Burton (Nemesis Rail).

CLASS 47

WORTHY of mention ahead of the latest round of rail tours is the return to daylight of Nos. 47580 County of Essex and 47760. Both Type 4s had spent the last few years ensconced at the Nemesis Rail depot in Burton-on-Trent, until recently. No. 47760 departed the premises on June 23, towed away to West Coast Railways' Carnforth base by No. 57314. While there is still work to be done on No. 47760 it is to be hoped that the tour it covered back on December 16, 2018 will not have been its last. The following day No. 47580, still wearing its Union flag, left Burton Wetmore in the company of No. 47813 running as the 0Z77/13.48 to Alton although No. 47813 was detached at

Staines Goods Loop to head for further use at Southall, while No. 47580 carried on to the Mid-Hants Railway. The last passenger work undertaken by this Type 4 was on September 11, 2018 when it suffered a generator fire while working a return tour from Carlisle to Radlett, coincidentally with No. 47760.

Of the LSL fleet, the two blueliveried examples Nos. 47593 and

47853 were particularly busy on tours. On June 2 they travelled to the Royal Duchy of Cornwall at the front of the 1Z45/05.10 Wolverhampton-Penzance and three days later worked from Cardiff to Appleby returning via the Carlisle avoider and Cumbrian coastal route passing Millom at 17.30. June 9 found the duo on the 1Z70/06.00 SolihullPlymouth as far as Bristol Temple Meads where No. 47593 was replaced by steam locomotives Nos. 45231+46100 and a week elapsed before another visit to Bristol from Wolverhampton, while a second jaunt to Appleby followed on June 19, this time routed back via Shap summit. Meanwhile, No. 47805 ‘tailed' No. 46100 Royal Scot on the ‘English Riviera Express' on June 6 and on the next two Sundays while No. 47593 took on the role on June 27.

Prior to setting off with a Carnforth to York empty stock early on June 17, No. 47802 was commandeered to rescue a stone blower that had failed on the line towards Settle Junction. Eventually, Nos. 47802 and 47772 reached York to work the 1Z62/08.25 to Carlisle with ‘Royal Scot' No. 46115 taking over at Hellifield and making a right time arrival at Carlisle. Another West Coast job that day saw No. 47245 taking a pair of Mk.1 coaches past Basingstoke forming the 5Z79/13.37

Eastleigh Arlington-Southall, the

Type 4 having travelled south from Carnforth to Southall in the company of No. 47772 on June 10. It was a busy month for No. 47772, a locomotive that had not worked a passenger train since late October last year until teaming up with ‘Jubilee' No. 45690 Leander for part of a Manchester Victoria to Scarborough job on June 5. On June 19 it was hurriedly dispatched from York to Carlton Loop to rescue A3 Pacific

No. 60103 Flying Scotsman on the 1Z72/07.23 Kings Cross-York charter, the Class 47 handling the return trip before ‘tailing' the 1Z60/08.22 King's Cross-York on June 24 (headed by

No. 47746) and then the 1Z62/13.58 York-Edinburgh with Flying Scotsman at the helm. Over the following weekend both locomotives operated a series of circular tours around Fife.

CLASS 50

A private GBRf charter running as the 1Z60/06.49 London VictoriaKidderminster left the capital on June 5, hauled by No. 66737 Lesia and ‘tailed' by No. 50049. Steam power in the form of Bulleid Pacific No. 34027 Taw Valley had charge of the Belmond Pullman coaches on the Severn Valley Railway before No. 66737 and No. 50007 returned the special to London as the 1Z63/17.01 from Kidderminster routed via the Lickey Incline. Two days later another Class 50 returned to the network when No. 50008 emerged from Eastleigh Arlington in Hanson

& Hall grey livery ready for a test run to Salisbury and back accompanied by No. 67028. The same locomotives undertook a return light engine trip to Didcot on June 8 before a loaded trial as the 5Z50/09.17 Eastleigh-Westbury (by way of Basingstoke, Reading West, Swindon and Chippenham) and 14.25 return via Salisbury and Romsey the next day. Meanwhile, No. 50050 ran from Nottingham to Derby on June 12 to collect Type 3 No. 37240 and haul it back to Nottingham CMD.

CLASS 56

‘GRID' No. 56049 visited Anglesey on June 3 when it hauled the 6C42/07.07 Holyhead-Basford Hall engineer's train before going on hire to DCR Rail, whose

Class 60 fleet was largely under repair. No. 56049 had 18 empty JNAs in tow forming the 4Z14/09.00 Ravenhead Junction-Chaddesden on June 7 and a similar loading three days later on the 6Z29/12.15 Brandon-Chaddesden. It was also reported double heading with No. 56105 the 4Z22/16.51 Humberstone Road-Carlisle Kingmoor Yard on June 21 and again two days later routed over the Tyne Valley line. No. 56094 commenced a run of several days on additional timber traffic between Baglan Bay and Chirk on

June 14 and was still so employed 10 days later, No. 56090 having covered the duty from late May up to June 4, while classmate No. 56078 could be found on an almost daily basis working between Basford Hall and Longport, sharing the workload with No. 56096.

CLASS 57

TWO Class 57/0s handled passenger trains on June 3, a relatively unusual occurrence. No. 57006 ‘top and tailed' with new stable companion No. 47813 on ‘The Dalesman' 1Z62/08.25 YorkCarlisle as far as Hellifield, where Pacific No. 35018 British India Line took over. Both diesels picked up the return trip at Hellifield. That same afternoon another West Coast Railways example, No. 57001, was activated to ‘tail' the 2Y68/12.45 Fort William-Mallaig ‘Jacobite' hauled by Stanier ‘Black 5'

No. 45212 as the dry weather continued to pose a lineside fire risk. Having worked a couple of freight trains during May, our namesake loco No. 57002 Rail Express found itself on the 6X43/09.28 Dagenham Dock-Garston on June 17 assisting No. 88001.

Nos. 57313 and 57601 traversed the Durham Coast with the 1Z70/12.41 Wakefield-Eaglescliffe ‘Northern Belle' on June 6, while No. 57304 was called upon to drag ‘Pendolino' No. 390112 as the 5Z14/15.33 Birmingham New Street-Wembley that same afternoon. Nos. 57313 and 57601 handled a Norwich to Chesterfield ‘Belle' on

June 15 before the latter was replaced by No. 57314 on the 1Z20/07.02 Manchester Victoria-Ascot jaunt on ‘Gold Cup' day June 17. The same pair operated a Crewe-Blackburn dining trip on June 18 returning via Settle Junction, Carnforth and Warrington, before taking charge of the 1Z53/08.10 Derby to Berwick-upon-Tweed the next morning. No. 57314 took a break from passenger work on June 23 when double-heading with No. 47813 on the 6Z30/11.23 Wigan TMD-Burton Wetmore with two cranes Nos. ADRC96713/5. Next day, however,

Nos. 57314 and 57313 were back in partnership with the ‘Northern Belle' from Manchester Victoria to Edinburgh.

CLASS 66

AN early morning additional working from Kirkdale depot to Walton Old Junction, Warrington on June 1 found Nos. 66705 and 66722 at either end of new Merseyrail electric units Nos. 777018+777016 bound for temporary store. Two weeks later (June 14) Nos. 66723 and 66715 left Liverpool with the 6X90/03.35 Kirkdale TMD-Long Marston with EMU No. 777002 due to be exhibited at the ‘Rail Live' event, as was No. 66723 along with No. 66764, which was named Major John Poyntz at the event. No. 66849 Wylam Dilly replaced the more usual Class 70 on the Carlisle to Chirk (Kronospan) timber traffic on June 14 handling the goods for five days before being declared unfit to work the 6J37/12.58 Carlisle YardChirk on June 21, when DRS example

No. 66305 was a late replacement. Having been almost two hours late at Appleby, 6J37 was only 52 minutes behind schedule leaving Chester.

The repatriated trio of Nos. 66010, 66028 and 66190 arrived in Dollands Moor on June 8 and were taken forward to Doncaster on June 18, behind No. 66098, eventually reaching Toton TMD the following day. Several others are expected to return to these shores on a permanent basis.

No. 66774 had charge of the 5Y10/10.25 Barrow Hill-Neville Hill

on June 15 formed of seven HST trailers plus power cars Nos. 43307 and 43317, while the following day a move from Doncaster Roberts Road to Longport found Nos. 66779 and 66727 sandwiching GBRf's recently acquired No. 66797. The following day, greenliveried No. 66779 Evening Star had charge o ft he6V41/17.08Peny ff orddA von mouth cement tanks, ending a spell of more than two months on the diagram for No. 66707 Sir Sam Fay.

CLASS 67

ROYAL Train locomotives Nos. 67005 and 67006 passed Tamworth (High Level) with a single coach on June 10 prior to working from Windsor & Eton Riverside to St Austell for the G7 Summit Conference the following day. Both ‘67s' took the Royal Train empty coaches from Windsor to Wolverton on June 12. Transport for Wales reintroduced the loco-hauled North/ South Wales diagram on June 7 when No. 67008 left Anglesey with the 1V91/05.34 Holyhead-Cardiff Central returning in the evening with the 1W96/17.12 from Cardiff. Only one such diagram is operating for the time being, although occasional training runs have continued with No. 67017 on the 5J91/11.13 Holyhead-Crewe and 5J92/14.35 return on June 22 and again three days later for instance.

June 16 found No. 67012 hauling No. 91130 and its Mk.4 coaches as the 5F17/15.51 King's Cross-Neville Hill after the Class 91 had earlier powered the 05.05 Doncaster-King's Cross. A quartet of diesels ‘topped' Royal Mail electric unit No. 325009 on June 22. Running as the 5Z25/17.30 Toton TMDCrewe IEMD the trip was headed by Nos. 67001+67028+67016+66020. Belmond British Pullman ‘67s' Nos. 67021 and 67024 took the VSOE set from London Victoria to Bath Spa on June 9 and to Chesterfield two days later.

CLASS 68

NO. 68033 undertook TransPennine Express crew training trips between York and Scarborough during the week commencing June 21, while that day No. 68022 and set No. TP11 formed the 5D08/08.24 Liverpool-York and the 5D60/10.31 return. The latter training runs had No. 68024 in charge on each of the following two days, while Nos. 68020/27/32 handled the passenger train diagrams on June 23. Meanwhile, No. 68026 had been particularly active on other work. For example, it hauled CAF Mk.5 driving brake No. 12802 as the 5Z68/05.16 Longsight-Donnington on June 2, ready for the coach to be taken away by road. No. 68026 undertook several freight turns starting on June 9 with the 6D95/14.41 BescotToton, covering the entire diagram between Basford Hall, Bescot, Toton and back to Crewe on June 14 and on each of the following two days.

Formerly in ScotRail colours, No. 68007 double-headed with Freightliner's No. 66555 on the 6C02/04.19 Basford Hall-Carlisle Yard on June 5 and covered the same turn alone three days later. In between times Nos. 68007+66305 traversed the Settle & Carlisle line with the 6K05/12.46 Carlisle Yard-Basford Hall on June 7. The other ex-ScotRail example No. 68006 powered 6K05 on June 10 hauling three MOAs and had just a pair of JNAs in tow on the same train next day. A few days previously, on June 7, No. 68006 had been reported at Dundee in charge of the 4N83/18.21 Aberdeen Craiginches-Grangemouth. Chiltern Railways No. 68013 was the rearmost locomotive of a quartet at the business end of five autoballaster wagons forming the 6K05/12.46 Carlisle Yard-Basford Hall on June 25 behind

Nos. 66423+37402+37425.

CLASS 69

RELEASED from Eastleigh Arlington on June 14 in pristine GBRf livery, the ‘bewhiskered' No. 69001

Mayflower was hauled to Tonbridge as the 0Y69/14.35 from Eastleigh in the charge of Electro-Diesels Nos. 73212+73213. Testing on the main line commenced on June 17 when Nos. 69001+73212 set off from Tonbridge on a circular trip via Hastings,

Rye, Ashford and Headcorn. Both locomotives then ran from Tonbridge to St Leonards depot on June 21.

CLASS 70

OF the Freightliner fleet No. 70017 powered the 6H51/11.04 from Hardendale to Barrow Hill via the Hope Valley route on June 18 rather than terminating at Tunstead BLI, while No. 70002 passed Kensington Olympia at 08.00 on June 23 hauling 20 loaded MRA box wagons conveying limestone as the 6O51/07.15 Wembley-Stewarts Lane (Tarmac) on June 23. The Sunday working of 6M25/11.43 Hunslet YardBasford Hall (June 20) headed by

No. 66515 had Nos. 70008+70020 tucked inside and five wagons for company when recorded at Denton Junction in early afternoon. Three examples (Nos. 70009, 70013/8) remain out of use in the DHLT pool at Leeds Midland Road while Nos. 70004 and 70005 have not been out on the main line during June, the former being confined to barracks at Southampton Maritime.

Class 70 bodies cannot easily be cleaned although No. 70816 was most presentable when handling the Carlisle to Chirk (Kronospan) timber traffic on June 1 and on the following four days. The Turkish-built No. 70801 on the other hand was externally ‘work stained' heading the same service (6J37/12.46 Carlisle Yard-Chirk) on June 7. Nos. 70802 and 70807 spent much of June working in Scotland although both managed to visit Seaham, the latter handling the 6S28/17.40 Seaham-Oxwellmains on June 18, while No. 70809 performed regularly on the Lindsey-Preston bitumen tanks towards the latter part of the month. No. 70804 remains out of use at Nottingham CMD.

CLASS 73

ELECTRO-DIESELS Nos. 73119 and 73201 (at the rear) accompanied

No. 66703 on the 5Q81/04.22 Bournemouth T&RSD-Wolverton on

June 14 conveying Wessex Express electric units Nos. 442403/409. Sadly, the attractive Class 442 sets, despite being re-liveried for South Western Railway, have no future, though it must be remembered they are over 30 years old. The three locomotives returned to Eastleigh Yard with No. 442403. Similar transfers involving Nos. 73119 and 73201 took place on June 18 with No. 66708 taking Nos. 442404/422 north as the 05.55 from Eastleigh and returning to Hampshire with No. 442420 and again on June 21 hauled by No. 66703. This time sets Nos. 442408/420 travelled north, with the latter being taken back to Eastleigh for a second time. On June 24

Nos. 73119 and 73136 took the LUL ‘4TC' set on the 5Y73/09.35 EastleighAlton ready for the Watercress Line's weekend diesel gala in which the Class 73s participated.

Caledonian Sleeper example

No. 73966 spent most of June at Eastleigh (as E6005, it was built there in 1962) travelling south behind

No. 66792 on June 2 and leaving late on June 24 in the care of No. 66745.

The following evening its journey to Edinburgh was completed behind

No. 92010 on the 0Z92/18.00 Doncaster Down Decoy-Craigentinny.

With No. 73964 still languishing at Brush, Loughborough since May 25, the other four GBRf ‘73/9s' were to be found on the same train on June 5 when Nos. 73963+73965 and Nos. 73961+73962 ‘top and tailed' the 1Q80/11.08 Dollands Moor-Derby RTC. The former duo set off back to Eastleigh two days later, while Nos. 73961 and 73962 traversed Merseyrail's Northern Lines with a test train overnight on June 8 having left Crewe at 18.45.

CLASS 90

LOCOMOTIVE Services' pair of InterCityliveried Class 90s Nos. 90001 Royal Scot and 90002 Wolf of Badenoch undertook light engine jaunts between Crewe and Stafford on June 15 and again two days later prior to ‘top and tailing' the 5Z68/12.57 Crewe HS-Euston on a very wet June 18. No. 90002 then took charge of the 1Z68/17.46 Euston-Oban private charter as far as Crewe where Type 3s Nos. 37667+37521 replaced the AC electric. Running light, No. 90001 followed the tour from London to Crewe.

The 4M25/07.07 MossendDaventry gained a pair of DB Cargoliveried Class 90s on June 4 when

Nos. 90019+90036 passed through Oxenholme, repeating the journey on a further nine occasions during the month, before Nos. 90024+90026 were utilised on June 25. The colourful No. 90024 (Malcolm Logistics livery) returned to traffic on June 22, hauling ‘Royal Mail' sets Nos. 325001/3/6 on the 1A97/19.25 Warrington RMTWillesden PRDC, later hauling the same units to Crewe overnight.

CLASS 91

NO. 91101 Flying Scotsman returned to work on East Coast passenger trains early in June and became a regular feature at King's Cross over the following days. Class 91 locomotives reported in traffic between the regular fare of ‘Azumas' also included Nos. 91110/11/19, 91124 and 91130, while No. 91105 was back in service on June 24 when noted on the 1D09/10.33 King's Cross-Leeds that morning and later the 19.45 Leeds-King's Cross. A total of 16 examples of the class are in store (largely at Doncaster), while five – Nos. 91102, 91113, 91126/29 and 91132 – have been disposed of.
