Historic London Transport water tower demolished

-

IT has taken more than 50 years since the final steam loco was withdrawn by London Underground (June 1971) for the surviving water tower, located just to the west of East Ham station, to be demolished. Work to dismantle the structure began in early July, with the top of the tower being removed first. This was one of three water towers, other examples being located at Barking and Upminster, that were provided by British Railways for London Transport steam locos.
