QUICK QUESTIONS: ANDY JOHNSON
■ Favourite current train and why?
It has to be the HST – it was a beautiful train to work on and symbolises everything that was good about the modernisation of British Rail in the 1970s. It's a real icon.
■ Favourite historic train and why?
The Pullmans of the day, whether it be the Midland Pullman or the Brighton Belle, as they were such paragons of style and glamour on the railway. They were the height of sophistication, the pinnacle of what was on the railway at the time.
■ Favourite UK station and why?
London Euston, when it was first rebuilt in the 1960s [A controversial choice! Ed]. I'm quite fascinated by brutalist architecture. I remember going down there as a kid and it was hugely exciting – very modern and streamlined. But even when it was really busy, it was always really quiet. The acoustics were fantastic.
■ Anywhere in the UK you'd like to visit by rail that you haven't as yet, and why?
I'd love to have the opportunity to travel through the Highlands of Scotland. It must be superb to see the amazing scenery from the comfort of the train. A friend of mine is a steward for LNER, based in Scotland, and he posts some outstanding views of sunrises and sunsets there.
