Isle of Wight ‘483s’ head for South Wales
IN a change to its original plan to house its two ‘38 TS’ units at the Epping
Ongar Railway, the London Transport Traction Group has announced that its two former Island Line Class 483s will be moving to the Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway for restoration in the next few months.
The two units will be stored on disconnected track while restoration and conversion work is carried out. It is still planned to fit batteries to
No. 483008 to enable heritage railway operation with this set and No. 483006, the latter in unpowered mode but providing passenger accommodation.
The LTTG also hopes to develop a small LT-themed display at its new South Wales base. A number of spares (bogies, interior doors and fittings) have been acquired from one of the cars from No. 483009.
■ The Isle of Wight Steam Railway, which owns No. 483007, also has a medium-term aspiration to operate its set on the line, using either battery technology or by propelling it with one of its diesel shunters.
