Rail Express

The COP26 UN climate summit was in full swing as this issue of Rail Express went to press, and has helped focus attention on how rail can help the world deliver on reduced emissions (see p.11). However, at a time when innovative open access operator Lumo has just launched (see pages 10 and 14), we also have the contradictory news of freight operators reverting to diesel operation due to high electricity costs (p.13) and, bizarrely, the Government halving domestic air passenger duty (p.10). The rail industry is clearly doing its bit – it’s time for politicians of all flavours to unite and follow suit.

Beat the hike

As the prices of food and raw materials have rocketed across the UK, magazine publishers haven’t been spared hikes in paper prices. The cover price of Rail Express will rise by a small amount from the January 2022-dated issue to £4.95 – still excellent value for the best news, features, and more, covering the modern rail scene. But... it’s possible to beat the price rise by taking out a subscription (see p.16). You’ll lock in that rate if you pay by direct debit, it’s a big saving on the cover price and comes straight to your door.

Win a free cab ride

Would you like to help shape the direction of future issues of Rail Express AND have the chance of a cab ride thrown in? If so, we’d love to hear your views via our online survey, which you can find at

www.railexpress.co.uk or just point your smartphone at the QR code below. It doesn’t take long to fill in and every respondent will be entered into a free prize draw for a chance to win a round-trip cab ride (or footplate ride, if you prefer), courtesy of the friendly and professional team at the Nene Valley Railway. Good luck and thank you in advance!
